Beginning and developing your yoga journey might be what you need to heal your inner self and rediscover your true essence. In the West, yoga is often misunderstood due to media portrayals, leading to misconceptions about what yoga is. These misconceptions can cause fear or hesitation in trying yoga. Let’s dive deeper into what yoga is, address some common myths, explore how it can profoundly impact your life, and leave you with easy, actionable steps to begin!
What is yoga, exactly?
Yoga is a holistic practice combining physical movements, breathing exercises, and mindfulness to improve your overall well-being. Through poses (or “asanas” in Sanskrit), your body becomes stronger and more flexible, while your breath helps to calm and focus your mind. Yoga can reduce stress, increase flexibility, and bring balance to your life. It’s a way to connect your body, mind, and spirit, and it’s for everyone, no matter your fitness level or experience. Truly, yoga can be life-changing.
Many people hesitate to try something new, especially when it feels intimidating. As a certified yoga instructor, I completely understand how daunting it can feel to step onto the mat for the first time. But yoga welcomes everyone, no matter your experience or flexibility. Below are some tips to help you begin your journey and embrace the transformative power of yoga. Whether you're exploring yoga's deeper aspects or looking for beginner-friendly classes, I hope these tips inspire you to give it a try!
Tips for starting your yoga journey
1. Explore what yoga really is
Yoga is much more than the physical poses you may be familiar with. Yoga asana (the poses) is just one of the eight limbs of yoga. By focusing only on poses, you miss out on the deeper experiences yoga offers. Starting your yoga journey involves exploring meditation, understanding the history behind yoga, and discovering what resonates with you.
When I started my at-home practice, I viewed yoga mainly as exercise. However, after completing a 30-day challenge, I discovered its mental and spiritual benefits as well. From then on, I was hooked, and I believe that if others take the time to explore yoga more deeply, they will also find it life-changing.
2. Move past your fears of self-doubt
Fear often stops us from doing the things we imagine. I’ve been guilty of this too many times. However, pushing past initial fears is something I work on consistently, and it’s always worth it. Starting yoga can feel intimidating—especially if you’ve never tried it before. Watching others move gracefully through poses might make you second-guess stepping on the mat. But trust me, anyone can practice yoga, and it’s about much more than just the poses. If you’ve thought about joining a class or starting at home, remember there’s no limit to what you can achieve!
3. Take classes designed for beginners
If you’re starting your yoga journey, it’s important to find beginner-friendly classes, either online or in person. Advanced classes can leave you feeling discouraged, but beginner classes are designed to build your confidence and skills at a comfortable pace. For those who prefer a workout-style yoga practice, there are even beginner hot yoga classes. The key is to start slow, focus on learning the correct alignment for each pose, and take deep breaths to center yourself. Yoga is all about letting go of judgment and connecting with your mind, body, and spirit. Don’t rush the process—allow yourself to grow naturally into the practice.
4. Practice yoga at home with online classes
If the idea of attending an in-person class feels overwhelming or your schedule is too busy for studio visits, don’t worry! You can engage in yoga fully from home. Many online courses and programs are available for purchase, and there are countless free yoga videos on YouTube. This is how I began my journey—by completing a 30-day challenge with Adrienne. That experience opened my eyes to my purpose: teaching and coaching others through yoga, meditation, and wellness practices. Starting yoga at home can be just as effective and fulfilling as practicing in a studio.
5. Purchase fun and safe yoga accessories
{As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases, and I’m so grateful for your support! Your purchases help me continue sharing wellness and mindfulness content with you, at no extra cost to you.}
There are many yoga accessories—mats, towels, blocks, and more—but you don’t need expensive gear to start. You can find affordable, high-quality mats on Amazon or even at Five Below. My first mat cost just $5 from Five Below and lasted me three years! As my practice deepened, I eventually upgraded to my current favorite! Here are a few more accessories I recommend for both at-home and studio practice Yoga Essentials.
