Root Chakra Balancing: Signs, Symptoms, and Simple Solutions

Has your focus been feeling off lately? Maybe your mind is constantly racing about the future, so much so that you can’t discipline yourself to stay present. I know that feeling, and you’re not alone. In today’s world, feeling secure about finances, careers, and the future is tough. Interestingly, these feelings can also be signs of an imbalance in your root chakra.

The chakras are invisible spinning energy centers within us, deeply connected to our well-being. First mentioned in the Vedas, the ancient scriptures of India dating back to 1500–500 BCE, chakras play a vital role in our physical, spiritual, and emotional health. Thanks to yoga’s growing popularity in the West, many are beginning to understand the depth and importance of chakras in our lives.

The root chakra, or Muladhara, is the first of the seven main chakras responsible for our sense of security and safety. Located at the base of the spine, it is the foundation of our physical and energetic being. When balanced, it provides stability, security, and grounding.

What is the Root Chakra?

The root chakra is associated with the earth element and governs our sense of safety and survival. It influences our connection to the physical world, body, and basic needs like food, shelter, and financial security. When this chakra is balanced, we feel secure, grounded, and confident in facing life’s challenges. We trust in life’s natural flow and believe our needs will always be met.

When I first learned about the root chakra, I quickly realized that I was probably dealing with an imbalance. I craved security and balance, but my life was chaotic and uncertain—living in a busy city with no safety net regarding career and finances. Learning about the chakras helped me take steps toward changing my mindset and my life. Feeling grounded, secure, and confident is incredibly empowering, and I hope to help you achieve that too.

You can use many techniques at home to heal your chakras, including meditation, developing new habits, yoga, journaling, crystals, essential oils, and more. Please choose the method that resonates with you, as we experience things differently.

Healing and Balancing

Grounding Exercises

Walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand and spending time in nature can help ground your energy. For example, try walking in the park, and if you feel comfortable, take off your shoes and socks and walk on the grass. I love to touch trees and feel the grounding stability they provide.

Yoga Poses

Yoga helps open awareness to various locations within the body, bringing balance to the chakras. Poses like Warrior I, Warrior II, Tree Pose, and Chair Pose are great for balancing the root chakra, as well as Standing Forward Bend, Head to Knee Pose, Supported Corpse, and Supported Child’s Pose.

Affirmations

Repeating positive statements can help balance and unblock an imbalanced chakra. Affirmations like “I am safe and secure,” “I trust in the process of life,” and “I am grounded and stable” can reinforce a balanced root chakra.

Diet and Nutrition

Your physical and energy body are connected, and eating consciously can support both. Root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and beets, and proteins like nuts and beans, are energetically grounding and help nourish the body.

Meditation

Meditation helps calm the mind and bring clarity. For the root chakra, visualize a red light at the base of your spine, or imagine roots extending from your body into the earth, grounding you.

Crystals

Crystals like ruby, red jasper, bloodstone, and garnet can help grounding and balance the root chakra. Hold them during meditation, keep them on you as jewelry, or place them near your energy source while you rest.

Aromatherapy

Essential oils like Myrrh, patchouli, sandalwood, and cedarwood can be used in diffusers or applied during meditation to support root chakra healing.

Journal Prompts

Journal prompts can help you explore your deepest feelings and beliefs. Examples include: “What does it mean to me to be grounded? How can I cultivate the feeling of being grounded in my life?” and “When my energy feels depleted, what can I do to nourish and rejuvenate my body, mind and spirit.”.

Conclusion

Balancing the root chakra is essential for maintaining a strong foundation in life. By incorporating these simple practices into your daily routine, you can achieve stability, security, and groundedness that supports your overall well-being. Remember, the journey to a balanced root chakra is personal and ongoing—take your time and listen to what your body and mind need.
