Before I discovered what mindful movement meant, I lived most of my days with high-functioning stress and anxiety. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, exhausted (mentally and physically), overworked, or constantly on edge, discovering mindfulness might just be what you need to find that essential outlet. It serves as a subtle reminder that the present moment is okay and that there is much to be grateful for. It’s easy to forget this in a world where working all day, every day is considered normal, and overachievers are rewarded more than those who know how to rest genuinely.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of the present moment without judgment. It involves paying attention to thoughts, feelings, sensations, and the surrounding environment with curiosity and openness. Mindfulness can be cultivated through various techniques and activities, such as meditation, breathing exercises, and mindful movement.
What are Mindful Movements?
Mindful movements are simple, intentional actions that help you stay present and focused throughout the day. They are designed to integrate mindfulness into your routine seamlessly. Below, I’ve categorized different ways to practice mindful movement for the morning, day, and night!
At-Home Exercise:
Choose one activity from each category and try it for seven days. Somewhere in your day, find time to journal once as well. When the seven days are over, read through your journal and notice how these mindful practices made you feel throughout the week. Some questions to consider are:
- Did it create more moments of quietness and stillness for you?
- How did it feel showing yourself love for seven days straight?
- Was there anything you noticed about your thoughts or feelings?
- Which activities do you want to keep doing?
- Which activities do you want to try next?
Mindful Movement Exercises:
Morning
Stretching: Begin your day with gentle stretching to awaken your body. Focus on the sensation of each stretch and your breath.
Yoga: To connect your mind and body, practice a short sequence of yoga poses, such as Sun Salutations.
Mindful Walking: Take a few moments to walk slowly and mindfully around your home or outside, paying attention to each step and your surroundings.
During the Day
Desk Stretches: If you work at a desk, incorporate desk stretches. Stand up, stretch your arms overhead, and take deep breaths. If you want to take it up a notch, buy yourself a standing desk to get some slow exercise in!
Mindful Eating: Pay full attention to your meal. Notice the colors, textures, and flavors of your food. Eat slowly and savor each bite.
Breathing Exercises: Take a few minutes to practice deep breathing. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a moment, and exhale slowly through your mouth.
Walking Meditation: If you have a break, take a short walk. Focus on your breath and the sensation of your feet touching the ground.
Evening
Gentle Yoga: Engage in gentle yoga or stretching in the evening to release tension from the day.
Abhyanga (Sesame Oil Rubs): Perform a self-massage with warm sesame oil to nourish your skin, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. Spend 15-20 minutes massaging your body, then take a warm bath or shower.
Gratitude Reflection: Before bed, take a moment to reflect on your day. Think of three things you are grateful for and how they made you feel.
Anytime Mindful Movement
Body Scan: Take a few minutes to perform a body scan, focusing on different body parts and releasing tension.
Mindful Cleaning: While cleaning, focus on the task at hand. Pay attention to your body's movements and sensations.
Incorporating these mindful movements into your daily routine can help you stay grounded and reduce stress. They are incredibly beneficial for fostering presence. When we are present, we experience reality as it truly is, allowing us to see past our solid emotions and perceive things more clearly.
Through many mindfulness techniques, I have found my way in life, and I do not doubt that you will feel the benefits of the exercises above! Embrace this journey and let mindfulness transform your daily experience!
