Eating healthy is more than just a trend—it’s a lifestyle change, and more people are realizing its necessity for living a better, fuller life. Why? Factors like the rise in diet-related diseases, increased awareness of industrial farming practices, and the growing desire for a cleaner lifestyle all contribute to this shift. People are starting to reclaim control over their health by choosing to nourish their bodies with what’s truly good for them. After all, without our health, what do we really have?
But being healthy isn’t about following restrictive fad diets. It’s about giving your body what it needs. Healthy eating is a gradual lifestyle change that transforms how you feel, think, and live. Let’s explore some practical tips on how to start and what it truly means to eat healthily.
How can healthy eating benefit you?
Before we dive into some tips to get your health on track, let’s take some time to understand why eating whole, nutritious foods is so important. Maybe you lack one or more of these areas and hope to benefit from changing your eating habits. Here is what you can expect when you start to take better care of your health:
- Increased energy
- A sense of balance and awareness of life
- Control over cravings
- Feeling more comfortable in your skin
- Serving as an example to others
- Living longer
- More daily joy
- Lower risk of disease
Whole foods vs. processed foods
Whole foods are grown or raised without chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics. They are organically, ethically, and responsibly produced. We often find processed, refined foods in our grocery stores and, consequently, in our pantries. Buying these foods is easy because they are readily available, inexpensive, and often disguised as healthy options.
For your best health, you should emphasize:
- Organic food
- Non-GMO foods
- Sustainable foods
- Sourcing food from natural grocers, farmers' markets, or even your own garden
When you go shopping, check the ingredients list. If you don't recognize the first few ingredients, you probably shouldn't consume it. If checking every ingredient is too much, try scanning it with the Yuka app. This app has helped and shocked me by revealing what I have been consuming and putting in my body in an easy-to-read way.
Diet vs. lifestyle change
Here is the thing with standardized diets: everyone is different, so what works for one person might not work for another. While a Keto diet might be beneficial to one person, it might not be for another. Diets can work; if you use a professional to guide you, you'll likely see tangible benefits. The problem is that once the diet is over, people often go back to consuming whatever pleases them. This is why I believe in not just diets but a lifestyle change. It can be more beneficial in the long term.
Beginning your health journey starts with discovering what your body needs. Take the time to dig deep and learn why you want to be healthy in the first place. Let that guide you through the rest of your journey.
How to start your healthy eating journey
Slow down and listen to your body to start your healthy eating journey. If you are committed, try turning a journal into a food journal.
Ask yourself questions like:
- How do you feel after eating certain foods?
- Are you energized or exhausted?
- Sluggish or motivated?
- Are you experiencing brain fog or mental clarity?
Foods significantly contribute to these feelings, underscoring the importance of eating healthier.
Listen to your body by:
- Slowing down when you eat: We can’t be aware of what we eat and how much we eat if we aren’t paying attention. Slow down and really consider and taste the food you are nourishing your body with.
- Keeping a food journal: Track what you eat and how it makes you feel. This can also be revealing. Seeing the items you eat in a day may cause you to think twice before grabbing something processed.
- Being aware of your cravings: Your body uses cravings to signal imbalance. Listen to these cravings and jot them down in your food journal. This will give you insights into the times of the day or environments causing your cravings.
One healthy eating tip you can try today - eating the rainbow!
If you are a self-starter and are motivated to get your eating habits on track right now, try this wellness trick I learned while studying for my holistic wellness coaching certification!
Eating the rainbow means filling your plate with foods of different colors. When you prepare your meals, look for two colors missing from your palette. Then, for the next 14 days, focus on incorporating those two colors into your meals.
For example, if you rarely have anything orange or yellow in your food palette, then for the next two weeks, look for healthy options that are orange and yellow and prioritize adding those items to your meals.
