Embrace Imperfection on Your Wellness Journey

Bri Parks · Founder, Yoga & Wellness Coach

Do you ever feel like you're falling short on your wellness journey? Rest assured, you’re not alone. Perfection is not only unattainable—it's unnecessary. Social media often paints a picture of flawless lives, but we only see a fraction of someone's reality. Even my life as a wellness coach and yoga teacher might appear perfect at first glance, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Like you, I have a brand to run, goals to meet, and plenty of personal challenges along the way. While I absolutely love yoga and teaching, there are many habits I’m actively working on to better myself.

Your wellness journey is not a race or a checklist. Some days, you may crave that sweet or salty snack, and guess what? It’s okay to indulge. You are not a failure because of slip-ups—those moments make you human. Mistakes can remind us why we embarked on this path of holistic wellness and mindful living in the first place.

That said, it’s important to strike a balance. While giving in to cravings or skipping a workout occasionally won’t derail your journey, it's essential to have self-control and intentionality. Staying mindful about how we want our lives to unfold helps us make conscious choices for our health. Remember, striving to be the best version of yourself doesn’t mean aiming for perfection—it means showing up for yourself consistently. After all, wellness isn’t just about what we do for our bodies but how we care for our minds and spirits.

What are some ways to keep your wellness journey in check?

Journal

Writing things down helps us remember them. Also, what better motivation is there than telling yourself something on paper? Keep your well-being on track by purchasing a journal and using it for EVERYTHING. Lists, bullets, affirmations, thoughts, doodling—a journal can be used for whatever you want. Journaling will be a great reminder to get you back on track when you might have veered off a little. You can check out my favorites here.

Use a calendar

My favorite is Google Calendar because of the interface. There are color customization options and so much more to help you stay on track or get back on it. You can use it to stay organized, plan things out, and relieve any stress by ensuring you're aware of what's to come.

Don't deprive yourself

Going on short-term diets often deprives people of the foods they usually eat. When the diet ends, they tend to overindulge in previously restricted foods. My tip is not to deprive yourself! Keep healthy foods stocked, but also have something to satisfy your sweet or salty cravings. I love having at least one juicy fruit on hand: mangoes, strawberries, cherries, or kiwis are a few of my favorites.

Use the practice of yoga

When you don’t feel like leaving the house or burning extra calories on a walk, you can still use yoga as a form of exercise by taking some time to stretch. Even 5-10 minutes sitting in your chair can make a difference. Often, when people start with just a small 5-minute session, they continue longer because it feels so soothing and relaxing.

Let yourself rest

So, you don’t feel like exercising today or eating the healthiest foods and just want to relax and be lazy all day? Go for it, 100%! Getting adequate rest and sleep is crucial for your well-being. While our culture often glorifies being on the go 24/7, rest is essential and will benefit us more in the long run. Without proper rest, we can't do things properly, and we become overwhelmed, run-down, and just plain exhausted. So take the day off and spend time doing things you love. A happier, more positive you is the ultimate goal. Remember, even the most dedicated wellness enthusiasts need downtime to recharge.

All in all...

Taking care of your well-being doesn’t mean perfection. You don’t always have to be the best, most hard-working, picture-perfect person. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them. Take downtime moments and enjoy being you. If you find yourself too hard on yourself, write down some affirmations to reassure your self-love or watch something that will make you laugh and take your mind off things. Enjoy the present moment and always strive for what makes you truly happy inside, regardless of whether that’s viewed as perfect by society.
